As Nepal grapples with the aftermath of severe floods and landslides, Malaysia is poised to lend a helping hand by sending DNA experts to assist in identifying victims. Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan has indicated that the country is awaiting approval from Nepal to dispatch these specialists. The DNA identification process is set to commence following the conclusion of search and rescue operations. These experts will focus on matching DNA samples from recovered bodies with those provided by families of missing Malaysian citizens.
In preparation for this effort, Malaysia has proactively gathered DNA samples from the families of 55 Malaysians who have not yet been accounted for in the wake of the disasters. The urgency of these identifications is underscored by the fact that several bodies have already been buried due to limited facilities, necessitating DNA testing to confirm their identities accurately.
The team that Malaysia plans to send is composed of 11 skilled personnel, equipped with a substantial arsenal of rescue tools weighing 12.4 tonnes. This includes state-of-the-art detection instruments, communication systems, high-capacity drones, and specialized equipment for tunnel rescues. Additionally, they are transporting a four-wheel-drive vehicle alongside a 10-tonne truck to facilitate their operations on the ground.
With these comprehensive resources, Malaysia aims to bolster the ongoing search, rescue, and identification efforts. The goal is not only to locate the missing individuals but also to provide much-needed closure to families by confirming the fate of their loved ones. As they await the green light from Nepal, Malaysia stands ready to contribute significantly to the humanitarian response and recovery in the region.
