In response to what it perceives as challenges to democratic institutions by the Congress party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced a series of rallies across Assam. From October 13 to October 31, these rallies will be held at district headquarters, as stated by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati. The initiative aims to express support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and reinforce public confidence in constitutional institutions.
Chief Minister Sarma criticized the Congress and other opposition parties for allegedly undermining institutions like the Election Commission and the Supreme Court for political gains. He specifically targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of inconsistency in his reactions to election outcomes based on the winning party. Sarma also disapproved of Gandhi’s stance on the Supreme Court, asserting that constitutional bodies should remain free from political pressure.
The BJP’s rallies will focus on upholding democratic institutions and countering the Congress party’s approach to electoral and constitutional issues. Sarma highlighted the Congress’s opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which he argued is crucial for addressing concerns over voter lists and illegal immigration in Assam.
This announcement comes amid heightened political tensions between the BJP and Congress over Assam’s electoral processes and the independence of institutions. The BJP’s decision to organize these rallies reflects its effort to galvanize support and emphasize its commitment to democracy amid the ongoing political discourse.
