Union Home Minister Amit Shah has issued a challenge to opposition leaders, specifically targeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, to bring their allegations of vote theft to a parliamentary debate. Speaking at a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state working committee meeting in Lucknow, Shah stated that the BJP is prepared to convene a special session of Parliament to address these accusations, which he described as unfounded. He accused the Opposition of opting for street protests rather than engaging in parliamentary discussions.
Shah’s comments came in response to the Opposition’s planned demonstrations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The opposition parties are organizing a symbolic public impeachment event and a significant protest at Delhi’s Ramlila Ground, voicing concerns over perceived threats to democratic institutions. Initially, the INDIA bloc intended to hold this event at the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge but postponed it due to unseasonal rainfall.
The controversy centers around the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, which the Opposition claims could negatively impact voters and unfairly favor the ruling BJP. Shah, however, defended the BJP’s political track record and criticized both Congress and the Samajwadi Party for attributing their electoral defeats to the Election Commission rather than accepting the outcomes of the elections.
Highlighting the BJP’s readiness for dialogue, Shah asserted that the Opposition’s allegations should be debated within the confines of Parliament, rather than on the streets. He expressed skepticism about Rahul Gandhi’s willingness to participate in such a discussion, challenging him to present evidence to support the claims of vote theft.
