In a bid to enhance connectivity and promote tourism along the Yamuna River, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced the launch of the “Namo Yamuna” ferry service. This new initiative is set to commence a few days before the Chhath Puja festival, which is observed from November 13 to 16. The service aims to provide a scenic and convenient travel option just in time for the festival celebrations at Sur Ghat.
The ferry service will feature a one-hour cruise between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur, covering approximately five kilometers. Passengers will have the opportunity to enjoy picturesque views of the ghats and the natural landscapes along the riverbanks. The journey is expected to be priced at around ₹500 per person, offering a unique experience for both residents and visitors.
Originally slated for a February 20 launch, the ferry service was postponed due to incomplete project work. With the new launch date approaching, the government is finalizing arrangements to ensure a smooth operation. The ferry’s infrastructure will include necessary amenities such as boarding facilities, ticket counters, and waiting areas to accommodate passengers comfortably.
The vessel designated for the service, Island Boats 40 (IB 40), is constructed by Mumbai-based Inspiration Marine Pvt Ltd. Designed with a catamaran-style hull for enhanced stability, the 40-foot boat is equipped to navigate the shallow stretches of the Yamuna River effectively.
During a recent inspection at Sonia Vihar Sports Club, Chief Minister Gupta assessed the ferry and visited Sur Ghat, a focal point for Chhath celebrations. The area is being developed into a family-friendly picnic destination, where people can gather to enjoy the riverside ambiance and offer prayers during the festival.
