The UDAN scheme, a regional connectivity initiative by the Indian government, aims to boost air travel accessibility across less-served regions of the country. As part of this broader effort, the West Bengal government is poised to enhance transportation infrastructure in Purulia district through a new airport project. The formal agreement for this development is set to be signed with the central government on September 28, announced Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
According to Adhikari, the groundwork for the airport has been laid out, with the state government having already submitted the necessary applications for licensure. The initiative also benefits from the involvement of civil aviation authorities, ensuring that the project adheres to regulatory standards and expectations.
The establishment of the airport is anticipated to significantly improve air connectivity in Purulia, a district known for its potential in tourism and industrial growth. By facilitating easier access, the airport is expected to attract an influx of tourists and bolster economic activities in the region.
In addition to enhancing connectivity, the government is actively pursuing substantial investments in Purulia. The district is being positioned as a hub for development across various sectors, including defence, steel, cement, and solar energy. Adhikari highlighted that these efforts could potentially draw investments up to ₹1 lakh crore over the coming year, marking a significant boost to the local economy.
