India and Denmark are poised to enhance their strategic partnership focusing on renewable energy, sustainable shipping, and bilateral trade. This development follows the visit of Denmark’s Business Minister Martin Lidegaard to Mumbai and New Delhi from November 2-3, where he engaged in discussions with Indian government officials and business leaders to explore new economic cooperation avenues.
The two nations are preparing to advance their Green Strategic Partnership, initiated in 2020, with a new joint action plan aimed at deepening collaboration in economic and environmental sectors. During his visit to Mumbai, Minister Lidegaard toured APM Terminals, part of the Danish shipping conglomerate Maersk, and held talks with Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma about investment opportunities.
In New Delhi, discussions with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal centered on expanding bilateral trade and improving economic ties, particularly in relation to the proposed India-European Union free trade agreement. Denmark is keen on strengthening its commercial relationship with India, recognizing the latter’s growing importance as a strategic partner. Currently, over 200 Danish companies operate in India, providing employment to more than 100,000 people.
Sustainable maritime development was another key focus, with talks involving Union Ports and Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on environmentally friendly shipping and modern port infrastructure. The discussions also explored the potential for developing green maritime corridors, which could significantly enhance sustainable shipping practices.
Renewable energy cooperation remains a major priority, with conversations between Minister Lidegaard and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi focusing on enhancing energy efficiency and supporting India’s transition to a sustainable power system. Denmark is also a significant partner in solar energy development, contributing to the International Solar Alliance to foster broader renewable energy cooperation.
This strengthened partnership between India and Denmark is expected to create new investment opportunities, promote technological exchange, and foster sustainable development, further solidifying their economic ties.
