China has expressed a positive reception towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks on India’s independent foreign policy, which came during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the BRICS Summit held in New Delhi. The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, highlighted that Beijing appreciates Modi’s assertion that India’s relationship with China will remain uninfluenced by other nations. The meeting underscored the sentiment that China and India should continue to be partners, fostering each other’s growth and development.
President Xi emphasized that despite the distinct national circumstances of China and India, the focus should remain on collaborative efforts while managing differences through mutual respect and understanding. This perspective was mirrored by India, which reiterated the necessity of peace and stability along the shared border as a cornerstone for advancing bilateral ties. Modi further underscored the importance of adhering to existing agreements and understandings related to border issues.
Both leaders expressed their support for pursuing a fair and mutually agreeable resolution to the boundary dispute. This meeting follows a period marked by tensions along the Line of Actual Control between the two nations. In an effort to de-escalate the situation, India and China reached a significant agreement in October 2024 to disengage troops at several contentious points in the Ladakh sector.
