In a significant diplomatic achievement, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has secured the completion of the much-anticipated India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) just before announcing his resignation. During the recent G7 Summit 2026, Starmer met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to finalize the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), setting its implementation for July 15. This agreement is poised to deepen the economic ties between the UK and India, which currently see trade worth approximately £48 billion annually.
Starmer has been a steadfast advocate for stronger UK-India relations, making the trade agreement a central goal of his administration. He emphasized the potential for economic growth that the deal represents, citing India’s expanding influence in the global economy and the mutual benefits of streamlined trade processes. Since taking the helm of the Labour Party following its 2019 electoral defeat, Starmer has worked to fortify connections with the British Indian community and foster a robust partnership with India. His leadership saw a commitment to enhancing collaboration with India across various sectors, including trade, security, education, technology, and climate change.
Before his political career, Starmer earned distinction in the legal field, culminating in his role as Director of Public Prosecutions. He ascended to the position of Prime Minister after a decisive Labour victory in the 2024 elections. Despite initial achievements in stabilizing the economy and progressing domestic reforms, Starmer’s tenure faced numerous policy challenges and political difficulties that eventually undermined his standing within his party.
In a heartfelt resignation speech, Starmer acknowledged the loss of confidence among his parliamentary colleagues regarding his capability to lead Labour into the forthcoming general election. He expressed respect and gratitude for their decision, drawing a close to a pivotal chapter in British politics. Starmer’s departure marks the end of a noteworthy period in government, characterized by both significant accomplishments and formidable obstacles.
