WhatsApp is introducing a significant update that enhances user privacy by allowing connections through usernames instead of phone numbers. This update represents a major transformation in the communication dynamics on the platform. The introduction of this feature is being phased, allowing users to secure unique usernames before a comprehensive worldwide release anticipated later this year. This change means that users can initiate chats by using a username, keeping their mobile numbers confidential.
The application will facilitate the creation of distinct usernames within the app itself. If someone needs to message a user, they will require only the username, as phone numbers will remain undisclosed. In cases where a desired username is unavailable, WhatsApp will provide alternative recommendations through a built-in generator. Importantly, there will be no public directory of usernames, ensuring that only individuals who know the specific username can initiate contact.
To reserve a username, users can verify availability by updating their app and navigating to the Settings menu, then selecting Account, followed by Username. As the platform has billions of users, WhatsApp is rolling out reservations early to manage the high demand for popular usernames. Notifications will appear in the app to inform users when this feature becomes accessible in their region.
An additional layer of privacy is offered through an optional “username key,” serving as a secondary security measure. This key can be shared separately, enabling users to control who can start conversations with them, thereby enhancing privacy.
This new feature targets a broad audience, including personal users, creators, businesses, and public accounts. It facilitates alignment between WhatsApp identities and existing usernames on other platforms like Instagram and Facebook. While usernames offer a new way to connect, they remain optional, and users preferring the traditional method can continue using phone numbers. In-app notifications will guide users as the feature becomes progressively available across different regions.
