Thailand is set to implement a shift in its visa policies, concluding the temporary 60-day visa-free entry arrangement that had previously benefited travelers from various nations, including India. This policy adjustment signifies a move back to more stringent entry criteria, potentially influencing how Indian tourists plan their visits to one of the most sought-after holiday locales in Asia.

Under the newly sanctioned regulations, Indian citizens will no longer qualify for the extended visa-free stay. Instead, they will be required to either obtain a Visa on Arrival (VoA) upon entering Thailand, which permits a stay of up to 15 days per visit, or secure an e-Visa in advance of their travel. The previous option allowed for a 60-day stay, offering greater flexibility for visitors. For those wishing to circumvent lengthy airport procedures, the option to apply through Thailand’s official e-Visa platform remains available.

Industry insiders suggest that this revision could potentially diminish last-minute travel plans and spontaneous holiday reservations due to the added application processes, paperwork, and associated fees. Despite this, Thailand is anticipated to continue attracting Indian tourists owing to its affordability, extensive flight connections, diverse tourist attractions, and renowned hospitality industry. The impact of these changes is likely to be more pronounced on long-stay tourists, digital nomads, and those planning extensive multi-city tours, who might now consider alternative Southeast Asian destinations with more lenient entry requirements.

The updated regulations are scheduled to be enforced 15 days following their announcement in the Royal Gazette. Travelers entering Thailand before this date will remain subject to the previous guidelines and can stay for the duration permitted at their entry. Initially, Thailand had broadened visa-free access in 2024 as part of a strategy to rejuvenate tourism and stimulate economic recovery post-pandemic. This initiative successfully increased visitor numbers and reinforced the country’s status as a premier destination for leisure travel, family holidays, and special events.

Officials have linked the tightening of entry rules to concerns over visa overstays, unauthorized business activities, and a need for enhanced immigration monitoring. The revised framework seeks to balance tourism growth with effective border control and regulatory oversight. Prospective travelers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the latest visa requirements and entry protocols to ensure a seamless travel experience to Thailand.
