In a recent meeting in Beijing, India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval engaged with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to underscore the importance of maintaining peace along their shared border for the continued development of bilateral relations. This meeting, which is the 25th round of discussions between the countries’ special representatives, focused on resolving the long-standing boundary dispute. Both sides explored measures to enhance boundary delimitation, improve border management, and broaden cooperation across the frontier.
The discussions built on the progress made following the 2024 agreement between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which aimed to de-escalate tensions in the Ladakh sector. Since then, various activities, including people-to-people exchanges, the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, and border trade through specific routes, have been reinstated. During the talks, India highlighted the positive assessment of bilateral relations and the importance of maintaining stability along the Line of Actual Control. Both nations reiterated their commitment to resolving the boundary issue politically, ensuring their long-term interests are aligned.
Doval noted that as bilateral relations gradually return to normal, this progress is directly linked to sustaining peace along the border. China, on its part, emphasized the need to consider the boundary issue within the broader context of bilateral ties. While both countries refrained from disclosing significant details regarding the actual demarcation of the disputed boundary, they agreed to persist with negotiations. The next round of special representative talks is scheduled to take place in India in 2027.
The timing of these discussions is particularly noteworthy, given the anticipated visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to India for the BRICS summit in September. This adds a layer of importance to the ongoing efforts to further stabilize relations between the two nations. Although no major breakthroughs were announced, the commitment to continue dialogue highlights a mutual recognition of the need to manage disputes while pursuing broader cooperation.
