India and Canada are intensifying their discussions on a proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), aiming to boost bilateral trade and investment. Canadian Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu is scheduled to visit New Delhi in mid-October, following the fifth round of CEPA negotiations set to occur in Canada starting October 5. During his visit, Sidhu is expected to meet with Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to address remaining issues requiring ministerial attention.
This visit coincides with a Canadian trade delegation’s journey to India, aimed at exploring new business and investment opportunities. The renewed trade talks are part of broader efforts to strengthen economic relations between the two countries, with particular interest in sectors such as energy, clean technology, life sciences, aerospace, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing.
India and Canada initiated CEPA negotiations in March 2016, and so far, four rounds have been completed, the latest held in New Delhi from September 14 to 18. The proposed agreement seeks to expand the $30.4 billion in combined goods and services trade recorded in 2025, with both governments aspiring to reach $70 billion by 2030.
Officials from both nations have made progress on several key issues, although some matters still require high-level discussions. Both India and Canada are eager to finalize the agreement promptly, reflecting their commitment to enhancing bilateral economic ties.
