During a recent visit to Moscow, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin expressed optimism about an upcoming meeting with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This development came as Putin hosted External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar at the Kremlin. While addressing Jaishankar, Putin conveyed his warm regards to Modi and mentioned his desire for their next encounter to coincide with the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s engagements. Additionally, Putin is anticipated to travel to New Delhi for the BRICS leaders’ summit slated for September.
Putin emphasized the strengthening trade relations between Russia and India, noting the increased supply of fertilizers to India. He also expressed Moscow’s willingness to further enhance these exports, underscoring the growing economic ties between the two nations. The meeting highlighted the mutual interest in expanding trade and economic cooperation, which has seen significant progress in recent times.
Prior to this meeting, Jaishankar engaged in discussions with Denis Manturov, Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister, focusing on enhancing bilateral trade and economic cooperation. Manturov highlighted the possibility of localizing nuclear fuel production in India, which could mark a significant step in the two countries’ collaborative efforts in the energy sector.
Jaishankar’s visit to Russia also includes scheduled talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. These discussions are expected to cover a range of topics, including bilateral relations and broader regional and global issues. The meetings underscore the continued diplomatic engagements between India and Russia, reflecting a shared commitment to addressing mutual concerns and fostering cooperation.
