In a groundbreaking move, the West Bengal government has allocated ₹5 lakh each to 60 Rath Yatra committees across the state, aiming to aid in the upkeep and restoration of their historic chariots. This initiative marks the first instance of the state directly funding such religious festivities, underlining its commitment to preserving cultural heritage. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari emphasized the urgency of this support, noting that many of these traditional wooden chariots have been in existence for centuries and are in dire need of renovation.
Adhikari encouraged the committees to prioritize the funds for repair and preservation efforts, ensuring the longevity of these iconic structures. Beyond the chariot maintenance, the government is enhancing the festival experience by arranging for helicopters to scatter flower petals over participants during the 30-km Shravan Yatra, which takes place at Tarakeshwar in Hooghly district. This gesture is part of a broader effort to enhance the celebration and ensure its smooth execution.
To further support the festival-goers, the state will establish Seva Kendras at 75 different fair locations. These centers are designed to provide essential services such as medical aid, police assistance, and access to drinking water, catering to the needs of the pilgrims. This comprehensive support system aims to ensure the safety and well-being of those participating in these vibrant cultural events.
Looking ahead, West Bengal plans to extend financial assistance to even more Rath Yatra committees, signifying a long-term commitment to these traditional celebrations. Additionally, the state is investing a substantial ₹1,000 crore over the next three years in the Bengal Shaktipeeth Circuit. This ambitious project is focused on promoting pilgrimage, restoring historic temples, and bolstering religious tourism, reflecting a strategic approach to cultural preservation and economic development.
